"Live" MSN Search: Ranking
|
MSN Search
Engine by Microsoft: The Future of MSN Ranking Results Microsoft's new search engine ranking algorithm will calculate
refined search results by utilizing a system that combines directory
results and the more typical, "search engine" matched
results, according to Microsoft's Patent Filing, dated July 3,
2002. Keywords / key terms will be attached to nodes via a parent-child
directory structure. When a user performs any search, he or she
will be presented with initial query results, as well as "browseable" node
links to further refine the initial search results. Microsoft further reveals that the "browseable" directory
results based on the query will be provided by utilizing an underlying
data structure composed of both categorized and uncategorized
nodes. Users will be able to refine or broaden the returned search
results.
"Search engines typically are unable to
provide a hierarchical relationship between data entities."
- Microsoft's
United States Patent Application 20030126235, Background [ 0013 ]
Apparently, Microsoft's goal is to provide relevant search results
to queries based on a conceptual model as well as results based
on standard mathematical phrase matching algorithm factors. Other Interesting notes from the Patent Application:
-
Concept Data: Key phrases are associated with
the search topic. Concept data structures are created by a
human editorial staff, data sites ( websites ), and or other
data sources.
- Category Data: A group [ of hyperlinks ] associated with a search
term
- Concept Data linked to a Category Data: Multi-source nodes linking
concepts to a Category ( this useful in cases where words would
not be readily linguistically identified with an actual topic,
but where there is a direct conceptual link )
- Looksmart is directly referred to in the patent application as
a directory source
- The patent is filled with references to modified data sets performed
by editorial staff, including creating, shortening, or otherwise
changing the data and/or structure to provide meaningful results.
The patent mentions combining directory results and other data
repeatedly.
-
Popularity - Query logs imported from Looksmart
will be used to create a popularity rating for a key phrase
