What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. The SEO industry was originally born when the the Alta Vista search engine developed the first popular search algorithm which studied the actual on-page content in order to determine which websites ranked in what order in their search results.

Savvy website owners quickly began to learn how to exploit the Alta Vista's search algorithm by tweaking their website to give Alta Vista exactly what it wanted to see for ranking purposes. Of course, at this time, there was no multi-billion dollar SEO industry. When we began studying this newly born art form, it had no name.

Alta Vista's ability to accurately gauge on-page content was extremely flawed, and these flaws led to serious and embarrasing exploits by industries (most notably the adult entertainment industry) which ultimately contributed to the downfall of this one time search engine giant. The mighty giant fell, and fell quickly when Google emerged on the scene.

Google

Google quickly became (and remains today) the search engine results leader when its two founders developed a recursive algorthim that not only looked at on-page content, but also took a snap shot of the entire internet, and began studying the relationship of all websites-- and the pages within each website-- to each page and the entire "indexed" internet.

How in the world did the search giant accomplish this?

Simple: By studying the relationship of webpages with each other via the only measuring tool available: Hyperlinks.

Web Architeture

Google has since set the standard by which all remaining major search engines evaluate SERPS (search engine ranking positions).

Today, SEO really has evolved into an industry known as SEM: Search Engine Marketing. Search Engine Marketing is now a very complex yet highly logical way to gain visibility in the major search engines.

Every website owner covets relevant traffic. Search Engine Marketing, and SEO, is still the most profitable and efficient way to drive targeted traffic to a specific website offering goods, services, and information. Whether a website owner is targeting a local market, or a global one, a successful search marketing campaign can literally transform a business.

SEO Basics: How is Search Engine Marketing Done?

There are two distinct types of SEO development, and both are equally important to developing a successful search marketing campaign.

On-site Search Engine Optimization

On-site SEO involves studying the business model, and how it is expressed on the website in question. It involves studying the website architecture as a whole, and every individual page on the website. The end goal is to develop user and search engine friendly pages that communicate the business model in perfect clarity.

Balanced and unique content is an important step in on-site optimization. A good website navigation system is critical to a successful website project, and the development of a good website navigation system is largely dependant upon the total size of the website.

Once the website and individual web pages are in good shape, creating a list of key terms relevant to the website-- and each of its pages-- is the next critical step. We have a special method of developing key target phrases that few other companies use.

Making certain that the key terms are properly represented in the coding of the website is also an important step for on-site optimization. While it is less important than it once was, properly developed website pages will stand the test of time, as well as search engine algorithm changes.

Off-site Search Engine Optimization

Once the website is ready for both end users and the search engines, off-site SEO may begin.

The first step in off-site optimization is to encourage the major search engines to index each and every page on the website. Aging pages, and in fact the age of a website itself, is an important SEO consideration.

Link development and website promotion off-site is a critical consideration in ranking. Acquiring links that the search engines like is an important process. Formatting these links to leverage advantage is equally important.

We use a whole arsenal of methods to achieve our link development goals. But the bottom line is: Find out what the search engines like, and give it to them.

Before one can understand how to rank any given website for a set of key terms, one needs to understand how the current ranking leaders have achieved their success. Therefore, a comprehensive competition analysis is required. How large are the websites of the ranking leaders? What is their link power (PR?)? How did they gain their link popularity? What makes the leading websites deserve to rank in the top of the search results?

If one does not understand the mastery of the current industry leaders, then trying to rank a lesser known website is reduced to a confused guessing game.

Gaining public exposure to a website project using any ethical means possible will only benefit a website project. Some projects may require Pay Per Click Advertising. Others may benefit from social networking. Some website projects will greatly benefit from forum posting. Some projects will greatly benefit from link swapping.

Is SEO Ethical?

SEO can be done ethically, what we in the industry call "white hat" SEO, or it can be done unethically, what the industry calls "black hat" SEO.

However, all SEO is at least slightly controversial, due to the fact that-- obviously-- the major search engines want to determine what websites rank where. Left up to webmasters and marketing professionals, the search results wouldn't be very high quality. If the search results are useless, the search engines become useless. Nobody would use them, and then ranking high would be irrelvant.

So there is a kind of dance between ethical search marketing experts and the search engines which are constantly changing in order to try and provide the best possible search results for those who matter: The searching public. Ethical SEO is the art and science of knowing what results the search engines want, and then giving it to them... and doing it better than the competition!

SEO Mistakes

The following are very common mistakes made by amateur SEO's:

  • Thinking that search marketing is about the search engines
In the modern world of SEO, the whole focus should be two-fold: The state of a website, and the state of the competition.
  • Over-valuing PR (PageRank)
An obsessive attitude toward Google's public or the public's perception about the link power of a ny given website, or any given web page.
  • Under-valuing PR (PageRank)
A dismissive attitude toward the search engine's perception of the link popularity of any given page or any given website.
  • Poor key term targeting
Very few SEO's are masterful at the way they approach key words and key term phrases. Again, it comes back to the competition's resources and competitive nature of any website niche.
  • Fad marketing
Obsessing on the latest and greatest gimmick for website marketing. There are no easy, quick strategies that a website owner should look to exploit... not if one wants their business to last!
  • Misunderstanding what unique content is
The web is currently being saturated by people writing web pages with what they believe to be unique content, which is largely ignored by both people and the search engines. In order for content to be successful, it needs to be useful.

We offer premium, world class search market services. We don't accept jobs that we can't handle, and as a small business consultant firm, it is our job... not to sell an idea to a website owner to make a sale, but to act as professional consultants, advising site owners exactly what one might be up against, and to develop a workeable strategy based on bugetary and time constraints.
